Warning for International Travelers: Big Brother is scoping for your electronic goodz

Okay.

I know its pretty cliche to go on about how Orwellian our government is turning (no matter how true it is) but this newly released policy of The Department of Homeland Security is really just taking it too far.  And the fact that they can disseminate this information to whomever they wish, whenever, for whatever reason is so absurd on it’s face that it’s hard to even believe.

We’ve already passed from cartoony villain (you know the place where things get so stupid that its hard to do anything but laugh) and we seem to be passing through the numb/dumb down stage.  What happens next?  Along with the near silent passage of the little-observed addendum to the Housing Bill passed last week that dictates that all credit card transactions (this includes Debit Cards) made in the US be funneled and tracked in IRS databases, the Bush Administration seems like its going for the Hail Mary pass in this game of Fabric of Democracy vs Unmittigated Evil (Or just plain evil for the sake of special interests).

I’m still pretty unsure as to what the hell to do.  Feels like trying to rescue a couple hundred million cows from a burning barn using sign language and telepathy.

The Engine of Chaos

Can we talk about The Dark Knight yet?  Can we?  I want to but I dont want to spoil the movie for those who havent seen it.

So I won’t.  I’ll just urge those who haven’t seen it to do themselves the favor, pony up the $10 and get down to the local bijou.  If you have a Digital Projection or Imax thats carrying it, you owe it to yourself to see it there if you can; 1/3 of the films scenes were filmed with an Imax camera for eye-shredding clarity.

Go now.  I’ll wait.

Still around…

Hey all,

I know I dont post that often.  Yeah.  Mostly its because I’ve been wrapped up in this thing called work.  Nobody wants to hear me bitch and moan about having to work to pay the bills, especially since EVERYBODY gotta do it.

But the long dark winter of my absence is at an end.

Well…maybe not an END, persay.  But there is some light peeking through the clouds so to speak.

Also, my wife blogs so much Better?  If they made a movie about her they would call it BLOG HARD (or die trying).

Anyways.  I’ll try and get somestuff posted later on about the fam, the photog work my wife is doing, the lack of monies in general, and some new ultra-geeky stuff I’ve been invovled with lately.

I hope you all have been doing well in these crazy times.

A strange and dark revelation

Amazon Shadow by Trondelarius

You may be wondering if something is wrong with your RSS reader.  No, do not adjust that dial, so to speak.

It IS a post by Benticore.

A short post, to be sure but a post nonetheless.

It’s just that I realized something that makes me very confused about the story I’ve been trying to extract from my gut and pour onto the page;  I fell in love with my heroine.

57 steps to enlightenment…

Hey All.

I’ve been a bit incognegro lately, but thats because so much has been going on.  I have a lot to talk about but firstly, I wanted to pass along this nifty slideshow explaining the sub-prime mortgage debacle we’re currently in.

Anyways, I’ll try and post later tonight, if I dont pass out.

Have a good night!

Strum and pick, strum and pick.

mvc-013s-1

So the wild star child and I had a conversation yesterday that got me thinking. It went something like this:

  • Cammy: “Daddy, I want to be in a band!”
  • Benticore: “Really? What kind of band?”
  • Cammy: “I wanna be in a Rock Band! I wanna play Rock Guitar, not regular guitar like you, but Rock ‘n Roll Guitar!”
  • Benticore: “Awesome! You want me to teach you how to play guitar?”
  • Cammy: “Teach me Rock Guitar, Daddy!”
  • Benticore: “Alright! I’ll teach you how to play guitar!”
  • Benticore, Inner voice: Now I just need to Learn how to play guitar myself! Hoo boy…

So I’ve decided to take our random guitar playing into the field of something a little more structured and regular. Cammy has a guitar, a small, wooden acoustic liberated from the standing shelves at Target last year. The thing has some rough, ugly metal strings and two plastic (not nylon) strings, and a rickety body, but I figured it was something cheap for her to strum on, which she enjoys. But if we’re gonna be playing together, I’d like to get her something that can actually hold a tune for more than 30 minutes.

She’s coming up on 4 years on the planet, so I know her interest, as well as her ability to pay attention (hey, she is MY kid, after all) will wax and wane with the moon, the stars, and number of birds in the yard, and a multitude of random, unknowable factors. But I think a couple of times a week, us just playing and singing together, with me showing her a few things here and there, might keep her interest up until she’s ready to really start learning strumming technique, chords, and note reading.

Oh yeah, I have to learn all that stuff too!

I’ve tooled around a bit on the guitar off and on for several years, but never put the practice time in it to seriously learn more than I already know. But I plan on changing that, as well. It always helps to have people to play with, though and my new gig employs a large number of guitar-playing band members. One day, when my courage and loins have been properly girded, I might entertain the notion of bringing my old epiphone out and strumming a few licks with my fellow morloks.

Right now, I’m just excited to be able to do another fun thing with my daughter. She’d make a kickass Rockstar.

If anybody has any tips on teaching the wee ones to play a little guitar that keeps it from being a big, ugly chore, PLEASE hit me up.

The way forward

Contemplation by Nathan Jon Tillet - www.fuzzyplanet.co.uk

As I faithfully wait for my wife to finish transferring our various blogs and what not from old, crap server to new, non-crap servers, I’ve decided, in my inestimable wisdom, to post.

Close your mouth, Dwight. Yeah, I’m posting. Yes, its halfway into March. Yes, I suck. But how does one climb out of the cold, dark hole of blog negligence? One post at a freakin’ time.

Firstly, some updates.

Second verse, completely different from the first…
So you probably know that I got a new job last month and am deliriously happy so far, not only with the people I work with but with the work that I am doing. We prayed as a family for me to get a break like this, to get a chance for me to really move forward in my current career and start to provide a better life for my family. That the prayer was answered is a wonderful thing. Exactly HOW it was answered makes me scratch my head and grin ruefully.

So, it turns out that the company I am at, not only do I know both the founder and the current VP, but I actually went to highschool with them! My first day, at orientation, they were going over the history of the location I currently work at and how it had started from humble beginning before being sold to the larger company I now work for.  You’ve heard the Garage Startup Internet Company Success Story hundreds of times I’m sure.  But when the mentioned the name of the founder, my eyes quickly refocused.  “Did this *John Smith* go to MICDS?”  My answer was a quick nod and a point to a large picture of him and his wife, smiling beatifically down on me.  Yeah, thats the same John Smith who graduated a year before me, played on the basketball team, and who I saw scrimmaging in the gym all the time.  Not friends, per say, but friendly acquaintances, definitely.

On my second day, the VP whom I had known from Highschool came down to shake my hand and say hello.  He seemed genuinely glad to see me and though I had figured it had been damn near 13 years! No way these people would remember who I was, Right?  Wrong.  He tells me that he say my name on the new hire list and said, “Hell! Thats Benticore! I gotta get down there and say hello!”  So much for the anonymity.

So the job itself has a lot to learn, but I’m learning it.  There is a lot to do, but I’m doing it.  The pay is a substantial increase and so is the opportunity to grow.  So thanks for all those who helped me through the application process and prayed for me and my family as we went through the hiring uncertainty.  The Benticore Fam is Movin On Up!

How’s that novel coming?
Yeah.  About that.  Work on Dreamrunners had come to a stop as I dealt with transferring jobs and what not, though, to be honesty, I was hopelessly lost in the Swampy Middle of my story and I needed a hard break and reset.  I’m still writing, so fear not.  I just gotta get my groove back.

Thats all for now.  It will be easier to blog once we get our blogs move (the service we have is snail slow and frustratingly spotty).  Hope everyone has a great rest of the week.
