No risk No reward pt.II

The whole RISK part is well under way. I’ve started pulling things together. One little thing at a time. Although it didn’t feel like little things, no baby steps at chez henderson – no, I ran a jumped off a cliff.
So as I have mentioned, I am moving forward on the whole “dream a little dream” thing. Funny thing is – I have actual sessions set up, a couple of weddings secured and it looks like May is my offical launch date.
Who’d have thunk it, paid gigs.
This week I’m grabbing a logo and trying to get the site together, although I think I’ll have the blog link back to here – I like my blog and I like who I am, and I think people who hire you to document their lives should see how you document yours. Which means my headers are gonna change, Not TOTALLY change but mostly to include more than just my little wonder Cam and Bri.
Can I also say that my husband is the kind of man girls dream about? The kind of man women push towards their daughters. He has constantly been thinking and helping, being supportive pouring his ideas out, filling in the gaps for me. I don’t think this ever would have gotten past the “man I should be…” stage if not for Jerry. Not that my people who I have let in on this haven’t been AWESOME, they have – Spoken has set up chances for me to shoot people, Nana gave me lighting gifts for my birthday. (they both HAVE blogs but neither of them update often)
I expect I’ll be going to some seminars in the coming months, and I am planning to take a couple courses at the local community college, mostly cause all of my formal training is in Film SLR’s and I want to make sure I am taking full advantage of the equiptment I just sunk a large amount of my retirement into. I know how to USE it, of course I just want to PIMP THAT SHYT OUT!!! I also want to beef up my photoshop knowledge, and a student discount on alot of hte software I want to try would be super duper nifty! I know it seems a bit bassakward, but I really want to be as soild in this as I can be.
I’m joining the associations I think are the most benificial to me. I’m learning as much as I can. Business accounts and fictious names and all manner of things you’d think I should have already known about, since I been shooting as Pinxit photo for about 10 years.
I bought a laptop then promptly gave it to my mother whose computer died a week ago and shes in the middle of a major transistion herself and needs the internet access, so there you go. easy come easy “I better get it back in a week, brudda in law and sister who are supposed to be fixing a laptop and sending it to mom YESTERDAY!!!” (is my hint subtle enough do you think?)
Funny I never actually owned a lap top that I used alot before. I have a Old Mac laptop that I really never used, I bought used from somebody back when I was poeting myself out. I think I may put it on ebay and see what I can get for it. Also trying to decide what to do with the Pentax, I want to upgrade it for backup equiptment – though I am sentimentally attached to it.
I would love to be in a position tha I could just give it to somebody who could love it, alas that is not the case. so things are moving along at a steady clip and I have to hold myself back to keep myself from runnin off half cocked. Will update hopefully upon delivery of my new precious…

Heather - My husband just took a leap and started his own business. Keep in mind that any equipment you buy is tax deductible as an expense, especially now with Bush’s tax rebate program. So, save your receipts, get yourself an L.L.C. or S-Corporation, and an accountant or someone that knows more than they’re talking about than I do. Good luck to you! You should have a wonderful portfolio of references from all those friends, and friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends that you’ve photographed.

Bri - I guess this answers my question of what have you been up to? ;) I think it’s great that you’re going after what you want. I find myself too many times thinking, I’ll do that when….., so yay you!

Andrea - So proud of you. So, so proud.

Also, tell me about this Mac laptop. In fact, I’ve been bugging the hubs all month about a new DSLR camera and he’s been researching laptops on Craigslist. maybe we can talk?

Melody - Raquita, I am so pruod of you for taking a leap of faith. This is such an exciting and brave thing to do, many people don’t have the guts to take risks like this. I am so behind you!

Benticore - “and I have to hold myself back to keep myself from runnin off half cocked…”

Hey, thats what I’m here for…to ensure you’re only running around fully cocked.

wait…thats not right.

You know what I mean.

I like the idea of the accountant as well. Very much so.

Since we’ve been together, you’ve told me of three dreams that you’ve wanted to pursue that didn’t involve being married or having children (check and double-check!): Opening a restaurant/Bakery, Travelling across the world performing poetry, and starting a photography business. I’m more than blessed to be be able to help you start walking the path of at least on of these dreams.

Love you.

Gregg - This is very exciting! I always envy people taking a plunge like this…especially in an area in which I have an interest.

We’re finally getting our first DSLR, which I’ve been desperate for, the point-and-shoot ain’t cutting it. However, the cost and convenience savings over a film SLR has proven to be very nice.

I know what you mean about sentimental attachment to your camera. I have two film SLRs that I will not get rid of: A Minolta SRT-201 that is fully manual and mechanical. It has a built-in light meter, but you can take that battery out and use it just fine. This is useful for very cold winter photography. I recently had CSI in St. Louis fix this baby up, and retro-fit it for the new battery types. I also have a Minolta X-700 that I LOVE. Fully manual, but does have some aperature and shutter priority modes. I won’t get rid of this, either.

What camera system did you end up going with over your Pentax? A friend of mine has a Pentax K-something, and it feels real nice – like an old film camera. I’ve decided to go with a compact Nikon D60 for now.

raquita - Greg-
I decided to make the switch to Nikon. I was on the fence when I bought the Pentax I shoot with now, but the way pentax just abandoned the line -TICKED me off something hefty, so I’m off to Nikon waters.
I do still have my very very first camera. It sits on my living room mantel.
